The Phelan School staff is committed to providing a strong standards-based academic program and high quality instruction so that students may achieve to their highest potential. This includes an emphasis on students becoming individual thinkers and lifelong learners. A broad introduction to literature, the sciences and the arts is provided within an environment that promotes self-respect, respect for others and responsibility for the environment and the world.

Phelan School is located in the southwest unincorporated area of Whittier and was recognized as a California Distinguished School in 2004. It received recognition as a Title I High Achieving School in 2007. Built in 1953, Phelan has earned a reputation for providing students with a solid educational foundation in a supportive environment for over 50 years. Our school community is a diverse representation of lower and middle socioeconomic levels, residing in single family dwellings and apartments. Approximately 28% of our students are English Learners. Sixty eight percent of our students come from low income families as determined by the free and reduced lunch count. Twenty-one full-time teachers and two part-time teachers provide the educational environment in self-contained classrooms for 540 kindergarten through grade five students.
