Principal's Message

Principal's Message (optional)
Hoover School honors the whole child. We strive to teach our students to be academically proficient, of strong character, and peaceful contributors to our world. We believe that by working together, we can best provide our students an environment that promotes a sense of family, a reverence for culture and diversity, as well as a desire to get along with one another.

We have come together to agree upon these deeply felt beliefs:
* We believe all children can achieve socially, emotionally, and academically.
* We believe that reading is the primary underlying factor for success in education and life.
* We believe all children can be taught to be peaceful and it is our job to be models of good character and positive attitude.
* We believe that our individual and collective success is measured by student growth.
* We believe that parent involvement increases student achievement and that it is our ongoing responsibility to develop and maintain strong home-school relationships.
* We believe that both teaching and learning should be joyful processes.

The entire school community of teachers, parents, paraprofessionals, and administration is dedicated to providing students with a challenging, age-appropriate curriculum based on Whittier City School District standards, state standards, and current state frameworks. Hoover educators receive ongoing professional development to put best practices for classroom instruction into action. In turn, students are provided strategies and tools to empower them to be responsible, life-long learners.

We welcome parent and community participation as we continuously plan and implement curricular and developmental programs to meet the needs of every child.

Lou Henry Hoover School is located on a small, quiet residential street, nestled into the Whittier hills, not far from some of the most beautiful, historic homes of the area. We are proud of the beauty of our school, which was designed in 1938 by renowned architect William Harrison. It was built as a WPA Project and the craftsmanship used is remarkable. The building's style is Art Moderne and the Whittier City School District has taken special care to maintain its historical and aesthetic integrity. Students and staff are greeted daily by an intricately sculpted mural which depicts a scene of the early Quakers who founded the city of Whittier more than one hundred years ago, and a sign which bears the words: "What you would want in the life of a nation you must first put into its schools." This quote by Von Humbold provides us with a daily reminder of our mission to help students develop the skills and character necessary for leadership.

The students of Hoover School mirror the diversity of our city. We work hard to mitigate the effects of economic and language deficits they may experience by providing students with a strong and effective academic program provided by our knowledgeable and caring staff. We gladly accept accountability for the success of our students, for when they succeed, we succeed. We strive to make learning an enjoyable, lifelong pursuit. Hoover School is centrally located in the heart of the city, and rich community resources abound. Students venture into the community to see plays and concerts at the Shannon Center, learn about research techniques at the Whittier Public Library, and observe our thriving Farmer's Market held in Uptown Whittier. Students here make many real-world connections with classroom learning.
